The objective of this project was to revolutionize high-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) technology based on polymer membranes imbibed with phosphoric acid through development of stable, high-performance non-precious cathode catalysts. High-temperature PEMFCs operate in a range of 150-220 degrees centigrade, making them ideal candidates for combined heat and power (CHP) applications. Successful catalyst development showed potential to be translated to other solid acid systems such as those based on the Cs2HPO4 (CDP) electrolyte. This incubator effort was however exclusively focused on catalyst development for H3PO4-imbibed PEMFCs.
