As part of the Minnesota Solar Pathways project, funded in part by the Department of Energy?s Solar Energy Technologies Office, Clean Power Research completed a scenario-based analysis that estimates and optimizes the levelized cost of capacity for resource additions to generate 10% of Minnesota?s electricity from solar by 2025 and 70% of Minnesota?s electricity from solar and wind by 2050, using generation resources located only in Minnesota. The analysis concludes that it can be cheaper to overbuild solar + wind and curtail surplus than to store all generation. The analysis described in this report was followed by a second analysis completed in 2020 that used the same modeling framework from the Minnesota study to analyze high renewables penetrations across the Midcontinent Independent System Operator(MISO) region.
