The objective of this program was to develop fabric-based wind turbine blades, aiming for significant lifecycle cost and LCoE reduction. The first design evolution involved three space frame blade structures covered by tensioned fabrics. The space frame structures showed little weight saving over conventional sandwich blade structure. Significant challenges and complexity were also encountered in developing fabric pre-tension and tension-retaining mechanism in order to maintain aero shape and minimize aero loss. Since it was unlikely to meet the cost target with the space frame structures and fabrics, two other blade architectures with non-structural trailing edge and/or non-structural leading edge were investigated. Fabrics were replaced with thermoplastic panels to reduce labor cost. The candidate thermoplastic materials demonstrated reasonable static testing results, but poor fatigue testing results which did not meet design requirement. The program was not pursued further owing to the aforementioned outcome.
