The ability to reduce fuel consumption and emissions while delivering packages is an immense challenge, particularly with the available technology. This is further complicated by the diversity of the different duty cycles utilized by the Pick-up and Delivery vehicles (PUD?s) at FedEx. This has created enormous opportunities for an extended range, zero emission electric PUD. The goal of this project was to produce electric vehicles that with the addition of a fuel cell system could extend the range of an existing electric vehicle to a distance of 150 miles. Using an existing vehicle design that had an extended range using a gasoline GenSet, the project team replaced the GenSet system and fuel tank, with a fuel cell system and fuel tanks. With some programming modifications and hardening of the fuel cell system to the weather conditions and other challenges of the on-road use case, the protype testing period proved the technology successful in this environment.
