The overall objective of this 3 year project was to rapidly advance the development a family of promising NAS formulations from proof-of-concept testing through to testing in a representative process arrangement to determine the potential for this novel solvent-based process to substantially reduce (i.e., >
40%) the energy demand and cost of CO2 capture from fossil fuel-fired electricity generating units. The goal of this project was to thoroughly characterize the NASs and evaluate their performance in a small process unit to understand their potential to lower the energy demand of a CO2 capture process and demonstrate feasibility. Detailed characterization of the thermodynamic properties of the NASs revealed large working capacities under low regeneration temperatures (i.e., <
100C) and lower heats of absorption than conventional aqueous amine solvents. The thermal energy demand for these promising NAS formulations was estimated to be approximately 40% less than conventional aqueous-amine solvents (2.06-2.15 GJt / tonne CO2 vs 3.6 GJt / tonne CO2).
